a couple of years ago

Why are some people calling Niagen the “fountain of youth?”

According to research, the nicotinamide riboside inside Niagen may help improve communication within your cells and reduce their age by up to 66%. As a result, you can experience a variety of anti-aging benefits, including improved brain and cardiovascular health, increased muscle endurance, in addition to a boosted metabolism.

What is Nicotinamide Riboside?niagen-live-cell-research-bottle

Unless you’re a scientist, it probably won’t mean much to you, but here goes…

According to wikipedia, Nicotinamide riboside (NR) is a pyridine-nucleoside form of vitamin B3 that functions as a precursor to nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide or NAD+.

What does it do for you in real life?

Increases NAD+

Studies have shown that raising levels of NAD+ may reverse many of the effects caused by aging. Mitochondria are the “powerhouses of your cells.” They’re responsible for converting food into energy. However, as you age, mitochondrial health starts to decline. Niagen is the first and only supplement proven to increase levels of NAD+, the chemical responsible for boosting the energy output of mitochondria in human cells.

Healthy Aging

  • Acts as an NAD+ precursor and a Sirtuin activator, improving mitochondrial activity to improve intracellular communication. [Study]
  • Promotes healthy mitochondrial function, which is an important component in human aging.
  • Supports increased energy, restful sleep, physical stamina and sharpness

Cardiovascular Health

  • As an NAD+ precursor, it’s been shown to support healthy cholesterol levels induced by a high-fat diet. [Study]

Brain Health

  • May support cellular health in the brain by providing an additional safeguard against axonal degeneration. [Study]

So where does the name Niagen come from?Niagen-why was this video banned

Th publicly traded company Chromadex acquired intellectual property on uses and synthesis of NR from Dartmouth College, Cornell University and Washington University and began distributing NR as NIAGEN™ in 2013. After it’s been manufactured, ChromaDex then licenses Niagen to third-party companies—such as Live Cell Research—who encapsulate the supplement and sell it as they wish.

Niagen’s Reputation and Reviews

Niagen is still a rather new product overall.  Even though several studies have been done, and its actually been on the market for a couple of years now, results have varied and it’ll take a while to see what real life use has to say about it.  Reviews on multiple sites have averaged about 4 out of 5 stars.

It seems that the biggest negative that people are reporting are that its not the cheapest supplement available.  This will probably change to some degree as more companies bring it to market.

The other main complaint is that people don’t notice as much of a benefit from it as they were expecting.  Interestingly, many reviewers have noticed that the degree of benefits seems to be at least somewhat related to age.  So, the older you are, the more you notice the positive effects and the younger you are, the less impressed you may be at this point.
